Amalgamation and Name Change
Vincent and Abigael (in Kisii) and David (in the UK) have joined
forces. Things are changing. A new organisation, Kenyan Community
Initiative Support, has been created and will be seeking NGO
status in Kenya. It will also be seeking charity status in the
UK.
The new organisation incorporates the work carried out by David
(see the KIS website) and the Mercy Gate Champion Children's
Home, which is now called the KCIS Child Support Centre. But
it will also be known by a more user-friendly name ~ Twiga Children's
Home.
Visit from ACIS, March 2008
David, from ACIS [UK] came to visit the centre
for 10 days in March, 2008. With him, he brought many cell phones
that had been donated to the home by the people of his local
community in England. Vincent managed to sell the phones in
Kisii and raised enough money to buy every child a new pair
of leather school shoes.
On the first Saturday of his visit, he held
a party for the children when their feet were measured. Fresh
fruit, biscuits and drinks were supplied, as well as skipping
ropes, table tennis, hula hoops, footballs, a chess set, etc.
were given to the home for the children, who had a wonderful
afternoon.
On the second Saturday, we held another party
with a cooked meal, using provisions sent to us by Tammy in
the USA, including lentils and pasta.
Again, drinks were provided by David. On this
occasion, the children received their new shoes, after having
another fun and games afternoon.
Evelyn Passes On
Evelyn,
3 years
Everlyn was found alone on the streets in Kisii
and was taken to a local police station. The Police walked her
around the streets for a whole day trying to find someone who
knew her. She spent the night at the police station before being
taken to Social Welfare the next morning.
Everlyne arrived at Mercy Gate looking relatively
healthy - although very hungry. She devoured a meal very quickly
and then had a bath which she didn't really enjoy! She was a
very pretty little girl.
Everlyne passed away in February 2008 after
it was found that she was suffering from an incurable disease,
and was buried on 3rd March.
Be at peace with God,
Everlyne.
We will always remember the pretty little girl who gave us joy.
Visit from ACIS, September 2007.
We were happy to receive David Steggall and
Dominic Muindi, from the African Community Initiative Support.
Although the visit was to sort out why our
children had nor received Insecticide-treated mosquito nets,
by the end of the visit, ACIS had undertaken to help raise funds
to build our Children's Home.
ACIS arranged a visit from the local NGO that
deals with malaria control and HIV/AIDS relief and we are now
going to receive the nets, the children will be registered with
the local clinic to receive anti-malaria drugs, and one child,
who is HIV+ will also be registered to receive the necessary
drugs. All in all, a good meeting.
